The Credit Union Difference
What's the credit union difference? How is a credit union different from a bank? What sets HHCU apart from your other options for a trusted financial partner? We'll tell you!

- Member-Owned, Not-for-Profit – Unlike banks, which are owned by shareholders and operate for profit, HHCU is a Member-owned cooperative. This means earnings are returned to Members through lower loan rates, higher savings yields, and fewer fees.
- Community Focus – HHCU prioritizes supporting local communities by reinvesting in local businesses, charities, and initiatives. Banks, especially large national ones, often focus more on shareholder profits than on local impact. We care about the causes you care about and work every day to positively impact the communities we serve – from youth baseball leagues to women’s shelters, we invest in brighter futures for all.
- Personalized Service –HHCU emphasizes strong Member relationships, offering personalized financial solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. We work with you to determine what is best for you and financial future.
- Democratic Structure – Every Member of HHCU has an equal say in decisions, regardless of how much money they have deposited. Banks are controlled by investors, giving more influence to those with larger stakes. You, our Members, are the owners.
In short, Hoosier Hills Credit Union is built around the financial well-being of its Members and community, rather than maximizing profits for shareholders.
More information about our not-for-profit cooperative
As a Member-owner, it’s important to understand that as a not-for-profit financial cooperative, Hoosier Hills Credit Union doesn’t have outside shareholders. We operate solely for the benefit of our Members, and since we don’t have to pay federal income taxes, we get to return more of our net income back to you and your community. At the state level. we pay payroll taxes for our Team Members, and the same taxes that other ‘for profit’ business pay (like sales tax and property tax) to support local schools, roads, and public safety, so the funds you invest at Hoosier Hills stay in your local community…paying local employees, paying local taxes to improve local infrastructure and governmental services, and supporting purchases from other local businesses. The bottom line - we believe that by offering straightforward products, staying local and working hard to build authentic Member relationships through extraordinary service, genuine connection and care, we will earn your loyalty and your business. Together, we can build brighter financial futures and strengthen our communities, one Member at a time.
